Beauty response

A response to Beauty
by Jane Martin

The low part of comedy illustrates this piece. It has its moments of wit, but there seems to be a fair amount of sarcasm, insult, and lust referred to in this one. The players are certainly active in this play. One woman envies the other woman because of her beauty. They are both very talkative, and they depend on each other. Bethany’s unhappiness is about both the superficiality of society and herself. Most men look at physical appearance rather than inward beauty, and Bethany doesn’t seem to have much self esteem or confidence in herself. Carla claims she is unhappy, but she is only saying that so Bethany won’t feel so bad. I don’t think Bethany knows what everybody wants. Everyone in this world is different. One person’s view of beauty is not necessarily the way Bethany views it. Society places a lot of emphasis on beauty, but one person’s interpretation could different than someone else’s perception. The play was written very well. One character complements the other character. It is funny, imaginative, and typical life of two young women in an apartment setting.
