No One's a Mystery

Response to No One’s a Mystery
by Elizabeth Tallent

Jack presents a diary to his young girlfriend in relation to his ego. He fantasizes about what she will write in this diary. Jack seems to be divorced, and his girlfriend comments about a fast divorce. Jack has a large ego, and he is imaginative about the future with his girlfriend. The girlfriend loves Jack, and she does imagine having children and a future with Jack. The narrator does know the truth about a future female baby but for some reason it is left to our own interpretation. I think the truth is that Jack responds to his girlfriend’s answer in a negative way because he doesn’t like her answer. He is being sarcastic towards the future. I think the title is ironic. The title didn’t seem to grab my attention until I read it over more than once. It’s just a lonely divorced man still thinking about his past relationship, but he is involved in another relationship because he is lonely, bored, and starved for attention.
