At the Un-National Monument
Along the Canadian Border
By William Stafford
This poem seems to celebrate the nonevent as in not the tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington, VA. The speaker is celebrating life not death. There is a positive in this, but it is with respect for nature instead of death of a human being. The empty field is a place to play or dance or enjoy life. It is not full of gravestones. The words I chose are No people killed—or were killed—on this ground. There is no battle, war, skirmish, violence on this ground yet it is sacred. It is sacred because he doesn’t want to associated with violence but acknowledge the celebration of nature. Even though the writer has alluded to the Unknown Soldier, they honored the soldiers that died in action but they never identified their bodies.
